BONUS EP. 02:

At goodr we believe that voting is a right. It doesn’t matter who or what you vote for. Because of these beliefs, Election Day is an official paid holiday at goodr.

THIS WEEK’S EPISODE IN A SMALL NUTSHELL:

Until 2018, goodr didn’t really have much for “official” policies-- this is what happens when your CEO is a flamingo-bro. We had a really small team and were able to just go with the flow. Flash forward to October of that year, and a fast approaching election-- we started asking ourselves some tough questions. Is voting a right or a privilege? If we make everyone work on Election Day are we suppressing that right? What role do we have as employers and leaders in the voting process?

Here is where we landed:

At goodr we believe that voting is a right, it doesn’t matter who or what you vote for. We believe that voting is a right, and a person’s ability to vote should not be suppressed by their employer, but empowered.

Because of those beliefs we decided to make Election Day an official paid holiday at goodr.

The goal of this week’s mini bonus episode is to convince just one listener to give their staff Tuesday aka Election Day (which happens to be 11/3 this year) off to go vote. If you don’t call those shots, submit an official request to HR and management to get the day off to vote.

Let’s make the case:

STEP ONE:

According to the United States Constitution, voting is a right. Ask yourself: Do you believe voting is a right? If “yes”, head on down to step two. If “no”, you simply don’t believe in the U.S. Constitution, and you might also think the world is flat. These are two rabbit holes we don’t have time for today. Peace.

STEP TWO:

If you believe in the United States Constitution and you in fact believe that voting is your right, next ask yourself: Do you think that your employer should have any say if you can vote? “No”? Pop on down to step three. If you answered “yes”… you probably don’t believe in the U.S. Constitution either and you probably also think Covid is a hoax, and these are two cans of worms that we’re not trying to open. (Gross. That's a lot of worms.)

STEP THREE:

The final step! If you believe that voting is a right, and you also believe that employers should have no say in an individual’s right to vote, then we agree!

So the next step is to support the rights of your team, by giving them the day off! Or challenge your management by walking them through these exact steps. Verbatim. Take, ‘em for a walk! 1...2...3...

When you think about it, making people work on Election Day is a roadblock. At goodr, we’ve chosen to remove that roadblock, and we hope you do too.

You may be thinking it’s not that simple Stephen! You also might be thinking: Can we afford to give people Election Day off? What about mail in ballots? The election should be on a Saturday! Early voting should last 30 days… blah. BLAH. BLAH. Those are all great debates, and we had the same debates two years ago at goodr.

At goodr we believe that voting is a right, it doesn’t matter who or what you vote for. We believe that voting is a right, and a person’s ability to vote should not be suppressed by their employer, but empowered. Because of those beliefs we decided to make Election Day an official paid holiday at goodr. (Yes, we know, we repeated ourselves. Tryna’ make a point here.)

Not to mention, Covid is making voting harder than ever this year. So let’s make life a little easier for our friends and colleagues.

If anyone makes this happen, we’d LOVE to hear about it. Please send your stories to carltheflamingo@goodr.com. The Chief Executive Octopus will probably reach out to you personally with great excitement.

On that note, we’ll leave you with a quote from the late great Harry Caray, “If the moon were made of cheese, would you eat it? I would. It would be delicious.”
